Transforming our public education system in New Mexico.

Infusing equity into the fabric of the New Mexico educational system is going to take a concerted effort among all stakeholders, as well as greater awareness about what equity in education looks like and how to achieve it. With greater understanding, the public can rally around our educators, families, and youth to help transform the educational system, so it works for all students in our state.

"Every year that passes, the system continues to fail its duty to provide a sufficient education while, arguably, ignoring students’ natural right to express views regarding decision-making affecting their lives. Our dreams cannot wait, for the longer we delay, the more voices fall silent in the shadows of a broken system [...] we are a movement with the people of New Mexico and we need you to help us craft the keys to unlocking our collective future."

Our Efforts

Freedom Dreaming 2037

The goal of Freedom Dreaming 2037 is to braid a collective definition of student success and an equity vision that is grounded in culture, language, and authentic learning. To do this, LAB youth co-designed a framework of education recommendations with lawmakers, community stakeholders, and Transform Education New Mexico (TENM) coalition partner organizations.

The first Freedom Dreaming 2037 event occurred on October 5, 2023 was held at the Black Box Theatre at Centennial High School in Las Cruces, NM. Transform Education NM and the LAB Learning Action Buffet, with support from the Success Partnership, NEA-NM, and Levado, took the lead in convening educators, youth, elected officials, and community members.

The event was interactive and included a multi-sensory art installation created by the LAB team. The art installation captures a joyous education campus where students and educators have everything they need to thrive. After listening to the audioscape while viewing the diorama, participants responded to the prompt: What do you dream of having in our schools or what change do you want to see?

Participants then heard from LAB youth about creating the installation. After that they engaged in small table discussions focused on four topics: hands-on learning, ethnic studies, mental health support in schools, and biliteracy. Suggestions as to what to fund in each of these areas were mapped out on flipchart paper and the suggestions were prioritized. Youth were present at each table.
